Weave Rug Care/Handwoven Characteristics (What to Expect)
Shedding & Pilling
Shedding is a normal characteristic of handwoven rugs made from natural fibres, especially wool. This will reduce over the first few months.
- Vacuum gently using low suction and a flat, brushless head
- Avoid beater bars or rotating brushes
- Remove small fibre balls carefully with scissors or a de-pilling tool
- Vacuum both against and with the pile for best results
- Place rugs in lower-traffic areas during the initial settling period
Pop-Ups (Loose Threads)
Pop-ups are normal in handwoven rugs and occur when yarn ends naturally work loose.
- Do not pull or cut threads
- Gently push them back into the rug structure
- Pop-ups are not a fault and are not grounds for return
Sizing Variations
A size variation of 3–5% is normal for individually handwoven rugs.
Odour
Some rugs may have a temporary natural odour from packaging and transport.
- Airing the rug will allow this to dissipate within a few days to one week
Creasing
Creases from shipping may occur and will relax over time.
- Reverse-roll the rug overnight to speed up the process
General Maintenance
- Vacuum weekly on low suction with a brushless attachment
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading
- Use furniture protectors under heavy items
- Rotate your rug 180° every six months
- Store rugs in a dry, well-ventilated area if not in use
- Always use a rug pad or non-slip underlay
