What size sideboard should I choose?

Big enough to be useful, but not so big it starts throwing its weight around. Aim to leave around 20 to 30cm of space on either side where possible, and in tighter areas like hallways or entry spaces, try to keep at least 80 to 90cm of clear walkway in front so people can move through comfortably.
